KELL GATE GREEN – CLOSED

There has been an ongoing pollution problem in the water course in Kell Gate Green.

Further testing of the water in the beck was carried out by Middlesbrough Council and water samples were taken on the 18th November and we now have the results. The second set of results still show high and unacceptable levels of sewage pollution alongside other contaminants which represent a significant risk to public health.

The matter was discussed at length at parish council on Tuesday evening and as a result of discussions and overriding concerns for resident, children and pet safety, we have decided to take the advice of Middlesbrough Council and restrict access to Kell Gate Green until further notice.

Kell Gate Green is now closed to the public and the gates have been locked and advisory notices displayed.

Every effort is being made to rectify/resolve the problem and we are working closely with both Middlesbrough Council and the Environment Agency to find the solution to this problem.

Please respect the closure signs and keep out of Kell Gate Green.

The quarry as a whole remains unaffected and remains open for exercise and enjoyment and a notice explaining that you cannot get to Kell Gate via the quarry has been put near the bridge at the bottom of the steps.

Unfortunately, we can't say when Kell Gate will reopen, as it will be dependent upon identifying and rectifying the problem. In the meantime, Middlesbrough Council and the Environment Agency are continuing to monitor, sample and test the water in the beck and investigating other options with the purpose of finding the root cause of the problem. Only when we have been given 'an all clear' for the beck, KGG should once again be open to the public.

Alan Liddle, Chair. Stainton and Thornton Parish Council.
13th December 2020.

Coronavirus (Covid-19)

As the numbers of Coronavirus (Covid-19) increases in the United Kingdom the government has increased the risk from moderate to high and therefore is introducing measures to slow the pace of infection spread.

These may include self-isolation, if you feel unwell or are showing signs of cold or flu like symptoms or are over 70 years of age. The elderly and those people who have certain illnesses or a compromised immune system are particularly at risk.

The villages have several elderly residents, some of whom live on their own with no close family living nearby to help. Be a good neighbour and offer to help if you can, by getting some shopping or their prescription medicines. In short be a good Samaritan and help if you can.

Two long standing residents, Matt and Julie Williamson from 2 Strait Lane, have offered to do just that. They have offered their services to be the first point of contact should you need help.

• Matt Williamson whose phone number is 07919892838 and
• Julie Williamson whose phone number is 07717476779.

Send them a text message if you need ANY help as they both work full time and may not always be able to answer their phones. If you have access to email, then contact matt_williamson@hotmail.co.uk They will then pass on your request to other local residents who have volunteered to help in this difficult situation or indeed it may be them personally who deal with your request.

These are going to be a challenging few months ahead and I am sure that by working together and following government health guidelines we will get through this difficult time.

This letter is being sent out by and on behalf of the parish council as not all residents have access to email.

If you would like to volunteer to help or have any questions, then do not hesitate to contact me or any other parish councillor. (Details on this website on the Councillor Information page) Stay safe and well and following government health guidelines.
